Aiming to use power from renewable energy for its business, private dairy firm Hatsun Agro Product today said it has commissioned wind power plants with 24 megawatt (MW) capacity in Tuticorin district in Tamil Nadu.

Besides, the company is also likely to commission a solar power plant with 550 kilowatt (KW) capacity this month in Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu.

The green energy projects will help Hatsun Agro meet 75 percent of its power requirements.

"The wind and solar projects cost about Rs 180 crore and are expected to generate around 73 million units of electricity per annum which will be utilised for captive consumption," Hatsun Agro said in a statement today.

"These wind and solar projects are part of Hatsun Agro's ongoing efforts to promote the use of clean and green energy sources," it added.

The wind power project commissioned by Gamesa India comprises of 12 wind turbine generators.

"The eco-friendly projects are an integral part of the firm's effort to create a sustainable environment by reducing CO2 emissions of 36,000 tonnes annually," Hatsun Agro said.

The operational life of the project will be around 25 years, it added.

According Hatsun Agro chairman and managing director R G Chandramogan, the plants "will result in substantial savings in energy costs in the long term for the company and in our own way contribute to building a greener India".

"We will continue to invest in sustainable energy," he added.

Hatsun Agro procures cattle milk directly from over 3 lakh farmers. The company's products are exported to 38 countries around the world.
