US President Donald Trump has pledged support for a grand 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, even as his administration tightens visa access for millions across the globe. While athletes, coaches, and support teams are exempt from his travel bans, fans from 19 countries may find themselves shut out of the celebration, the New York Times reported.
Trump’s travel ban carves out an Olympic loophole
Despite maintaining travel bans on countries such as Iran, Yemen, and Somalia, the White House clarified that Olympic athletes and personnel would be permitted entry. A task force has also been created to streamline the process for these groups—especially those attending the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics. Most will enter on special P or O-category visas designated for elite performers.
Fans from banned countries face visa bond and travel limits
Spectators from affected countries are not so lucky. They must apply for visas under existing restrictions and, in some cases, pay steep visa bonds. A new pilot programme for Malawi and Zambia, starting August 20, requires travellers to post refundable bonds of up to $15,000. These visitors must also fly into just three designated airports—JFK, Dulles, or Boston Logan.
Olympics could see fewer global spectators under Trump’s crackdown
The State Department has acknowledged that tourism supports nearly 10 million U.S. jobs and encouraged early visa applications for 2028. But critics warn the restrictions may deter fans from attending one of the world’s biggest sporting events. The president’s policy, they argue, threatens to undercut the international spirit of the Games.
High overstay rates cited for bond programme, not just politics
The administration has justified the bond requirement based on overstay data from the Department of Homeland Security. The pilot focuses on B1/B2 business and tourism visa holders, not just Olympic visitors. Still, the message is clear: unless you're competing, expect barriers to your entry.
The contradiction at the heart of Trump’s Olympic plan
Even as Trump envisions a grand global event on U.S. soil, his immigration policy sends a different message. With 19 countries facing outright bans or heightened restrictions, and more potentially subject to bond programmes, the 2028 Olympics may reflect Trump’s America—fortified borders, selective welcome.
