In what comes as his first major public disagreement with US President Donald Trump, Tesla head Elon Musk has voiced his disappointment over Trump's latest spending proposal - "One Big Beautiful Bill".
While speaking about the spending proposal, Elon Musk said he was “disappointed to see the massive spending bill, which increases the budget deficit, not decrease it, and undermines the work that our DOGE team is doing."
After claiming that Trump's new bill undermines DOGE's work, Musk further said, "I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful. But I don’t think it can be both."
A May 22 report from the University of Pennsylvania has said that the proposed extension of Trump tax cuts, first implemented in 2017 and which are due to expire this year, may widen the primary deficit by $2.8 trillion over 10 years. This contradicts Trump's earlier promise of reducing federal deficits.
Notably, while Trump had brought in Musk to lead the DOGE team and while DOGE has reported savings of over $175 billion, Musk and his team have often been criticised for a lack of transparency. They have even faced legal challenges over the scope of their work.
Meanwhile, Musk's sharp criticism of Trump's policies coincides with a tough time for his company Tesla. Reports have said that in recent times, Musk has had to step back from his role at DOGE to focus more on his businesses. This came after Tesla’s April sales dropped to their lowest level in three years.
