Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party and prominent Sikh politician, suffered a major defeat in the general elections, losing his own seat. The party also failed to secure even 12 seats nationwide, resulting in the loss of its official national party status.
After the result Singh resigned from his post of head of New Democratic Party, the NDP contested elections of 343 seats but managed to win just 8 seats.
Singh, who had represented Burnaby since 2019, lost his seat in the newly redrawn riding of Burnaby Central, finishing third in the race.
"I am disappointed that we could not win more seats. But I am not disappointed in our movement. I am hopeful for our Party. I KNOW that we will always choose to hope over fear," the 46-year-old leader responded to the defeat.

He said, "But we are only defeated when we believe those that tell us we can never dream of a better Canada. I've often spoken of a lesson my mother shared with me: the Sikh teaching of Chardi Kala. It means 'rising spirits'. Optimism over struggle. This is the spirit I carry tonight," he tweeted.
Singh also congratulated Mark Carney for the win.
