Mysuru is gearing up to launch a one-of-a-kind travel and learning destination—the world’s first tilted dome LED planetarium. Set to open in September 2025 at the Chamundi Hills campus, this groundbreaking attraction will offer visitors an immersive experience of the night sky like never before.

Unlike traditional planetariums, this Rs 91-crore marvel features a 15-meter dome tilted at a 15-degree angle, allowing viewers to gaze at the stars directly in front of them. Say goodbye to craning your neck! The cutting-edge LED dome system, powered by SkyExplorer software from RSA Cosmos, boasts 8K resolution, vivid colours, and exceptional brightness, delivering lifelike views of the universe.

IIAp Director Annapurni Subramanian highlights that the advanced LED system will revolutionize the planetarium experience by offering brighter visuals and a much broader colour spectrum compared to traditional projector-based setups. This cutting-edge technology will bring starry skies, planets, and celestial bodies to life with stunning realism, immersing visitors in the wonders of the cosmos.

The planetarium is part of a larger initiative by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIAp) and the University of Mysore. This planetarium will be part of a larger initiative called the Cosmology Education and Research Training Centre (COSMOS). The aim of COSMOS is to become a hub for astronomical education, offering programs for students and teachers, while also raising public awareness about astronomy and cosmology.

This innovative project is backed by MPLADS funds from Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and supported by the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Atomic Energy, and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser.

Whether you're a stargazing enthusiast, a curious traveler, or a family looking for a unique day out, Mysuru’s tilted dome planetarium promises to be a must-visit. Combine your visit with a trip to the scenic Chamundi Hills, and prepare for an awe-inspiring cosmic adventure!
