In a remarkable stride towards urban sanitation and sustainable living, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as India’s cleanest state in the 9th edition of the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The state capital, Lucknow, made history by becoming the first city in Uttar Pradesh to achieve a 7-star Garbage Free City (GFC) rating. It was also ranked third among Indian cities with populations over one million, earning the coveted Presidential Award for its efforts. Gorakhpur, Agra, and Other Cities Shine
Gorakhpur walked away with double honours: ranked third in the Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher category and fourth in the 3–10 lakh population bracket, along with a 5-star GFC rating.
Agra, home to the Taj Mahal, was named Emerging Clean City of Uttar Pradesh and ranked 32nd nationally, also securing a 5-star GFC certification.
