If you’re planning a wildlife adventure in Assam, here’s an important update: The jeep safari at the world-famous Kaziranga National Park will be indefinitely closed from May 19, 2025, due to the upcoming monsoon season and deteriorating road conditions. This announcement was made by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), which shared an official notice from the Forest Department.
“In view of persistent bad weather and poor road conditions, Jeep Safari at Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve will remain closed from 19th May 2025 until further notice,” the CMO said in a post on X.
Kaziranga National Park remains closed annually from May to October due to the risk of flooding from the Brahmaputra River. The heavy rains during this season lead to rising water levels, submerging parts of the park and affecting accessibility.
Kaziranga: A Living Wildlife Treasure
Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and iconic inhabitants such as the one-horned rhinoceros, Kaziranga has emerged as a top-choice destination for families and wildlife aficionados.
Declared a National Park in 1974 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga is located in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam, bordered by the Brahmaputra River in the north and Karbi Anglong Hills in the south.
It is home to the largest population of greater one-horned rhinoceroses in the world and supports a wide array of wildlife, including the Bengal tiger, elephants, swamp deer, wild water buffalo, and more than 480 species of birds.
Kaziranga has also earned global recognition — The New York Times listed Assam and Kaziranga National Park in the fourth spot on its "52 Places to Visit in 2025", making it a must-see for eco-tourists worldwide.
Best Time for Jeep Safari at Kaziranga
The park is open to visitors from November to April, which is considered the best time for wildlife safaris. The weather is pleasant, visibility is high, and road conditions are ideal for exploring the park's core zones.
What to Expect on a Kaziranga Jeep Safari
A jeep safari in Kaziranga offers the chance to traverse its diverse terrain — from vast grasslands and marshes to tropical forests. Visitors often encounter rhinos grazing peacefully, elephant herds, and colorful bird species like storks, hornbills, and pelicans.
Though sightings of the elusive Bengal tiger are rare, the thrill of tracking them in their natural habitat adds to the experience. Professional guides accompany each jeep, enhancing the journey with insights about the flora and fauna.
Plan Your Visit Before Monsoon Closure
If you’re in Assam or looking to plan a nature-filled weekend escape, make sure to visit Kaziranga before May 19, 2025, as jeep safaris will be halted during the monsoon season. The park is expected to reopen in November, when wildlife sightings resume in full swing.
