The Karnataka government, in its budget on March 7, said that it expects to attract an investment of Rs 8,000 crore with a goal of creating 1.5 lakh jobs through the New Tourism Policy 2024-29, which aims to position tourism as a priority sector through holistic and sustainable development.

As part of this initiative, the Sri Renuka Yallamma Temple and Devika Rani Roerich Estate will be developed under the Special Capital Assistance Scheme at a total cost of Rs 199 crore. Additionally, tourist destinations in ten select districts will be developed at a cost of ₹50 crore in the coming financial year. The state will also focus on promoting educational, health, adventure, environmental, water sports, and coastal tourism through development projects in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada, including the upgradation of highway hubs.

Efforts to enhance Karnataka’s rich heritage include infrastructure upgrades at UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Beluru, Halebidu, and Somanathpura. Plans are also underway to include the historically significant Lakkundi Temple in the World Heritage list, with the development of necessary amenities and an open museum to conserve archaeological remains. The government has identified 25 monuments for adoption under the Namma Smaraka Digital Forum, with a proposal to expand the initiative further. To preserve and showcase the state’s cultural legacy, the old DC office (Athara Kacheri) building in Mysuru will be converted into a state-level museum, highlighting Karnataka’s rich history, social milestones, and the evolution of civilization.

In a bid to enhance tourist safety and experience, the government will increase the number of Pravasi Mitras—trained guides and assistants at key tourist spots—to 1,000. A 24x7 helpline will also be introduced to provide real-time information to visitors. Additionally, the One-TAC digital grid will be leveraged to collect and manage comprehensive data on tourist destinations across the state.

With a strong focus on tourism-led economic growth, conservation, and infrastructure development, Karnataka’s new policy seeks to establish the state as a leading destination while creating employment opportunities and boosting local economies.
