The heavy Pakistani firing and shelling were reported along the LoC in Poonch district's Krishna Ghati sector and Rajouri's Nowshera sector, and along the IB in Kathua district, the officials said.

Earlier, a defence spokesperson said Pakistan initiated the unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and shelling with mortars in the sector around 3.45 pm.

Speaking after receiving the Guard of Honour, Saini said the Army was prepared for all challenges.

Border Security Force chief V K Johri, during his address on the occasion of the 55th raising day of the force here, said his troops have avowed to ensure that the sanctity of the borders, specifically the India-Pakistan border, is ensured "at every cost".

"The Indian army is retaliating befittingly to silence Pakistani guns," a defence spokesperson said, adding the cross-border firing between the two sides was on when the reports came in last.

According to Indian Army sources, in the last 36 hours there have been a number of attempts by Pakistan to disturb peace and to target pilgrims participating in the ongoing Amarnath yatra.

Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said the central government has adopted a policy of zero tolerance towards cross-border infiltration.

The divisional commissioner directed the executing agencies to set weekly targets and expedite the pace of work for timely completion of the project.

The Union Home Ministry order stated that it has been 'decided by the Government of India to suspend the LoC trade at Salamabad and Chakkan-da-Bagh in Jammu and Kashmir'.
