  • Labourer arrested for not reporting biker trapped in Delhi construction pit
  • Biker died after hours without rescue; main contractor still at large
  • Pit lacked proper barricades; protests held demanding accountability

The police on Sunday arrested a 23-year-old labourer for allegedly not informing authorities after he found a young biker injured inside a deep construction pit in west Delhi’s Janakpuri area, while the main contractor remains at large. The biker, Kamal Dhyani (25), later died after remaining trapped in the pit for several hours without help.

The arrested labourer, Yogesh, was taken into custody from Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh. Police said he was present at the construction site on Thursday night when Dhyani’s motorcycle fell into a newly dug pipeline pit that was around 14 feet deep. Instead of calling the police or emergency services, Yogesh informed his supervisor, sub-contractor Rajesh Kumar Prajapati.

According to the police, Prajapati reached the site within 15 to 20 minutes after receiving the call. He allegedly saw Dhyani lying injured in the pit, with the motorcycle’s headlight still switched on, but left without arranging any rescue or informing the police. Prajapati was arrested on Saturday and was sent to police custody for one day.

Police said an eyewitness, Vipin Singh, saw the motorcycle fall into the pit late on Thursday night. He immediately alerted a security guard at a nearby residential complex, who then informed Yogesh. Despite several people becoming aware of the accident, no one contacted the police for nearly eight hours.

Dhyani was finally discovered by a woman passing by the area around 8.03 am on Friday while taking her son to school. According to her family, she first informed a nearby security guard, but he did not respond. When others at the spot also hesitated to act, she called the police control room herself.

Meanwhile, a candlelight march was held to mourn Dhyani’s death and demand accountability. During the protest, AAP’s Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj was briefly detained by police, who said he was attempting to stage a demonstration.

Police are now questioning security guards and examining the role of the main contractor who hired Prajapati. Investigators revealed that the pit had been dug just a day before the accident and was not properly barricaded, unlike an older excavation nearby that regular commuters were aware of.
