Elon Musk seems to have a big plan to dominate the digital world. He bought Twitter and rebranded it as X and also launched GrokAI, to challenge other chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot. With Tesla already leading the electric vehicle market, it looks like Musk is now setting his sights on email.

Rumor has it he's preparing to launch Xmail, a new email service to compete with Gmail, one of the most popular email platforms.

Musk didn’t initially reveal his plan for an email platform, but it all started with a tweet from a user named Nimi Owji, a web researcher. Nimi suggested that having an @x.com email address would be the only thing that could make him switch from Gmail. Musk responded, saying, "Interesting. We need to rethink how messaging, including email, works overall." This sparked curiosity, hinting that Musk might be considering a new approach to email, possibly as part of his ongoing quest to reshape the digital world.

What would Xmail look like?

In a separate tweet, Musk also added that introducing an email service –which in this case is an Xmail app – is “on the list of things to do.” Musk's announcement was met with mixed reactions on X, with some users explaining the kind of email apps they would want the Musk-led company to design.

Although Musk has not made any details official about the forthcoming Xmail app, his response to an X user hints that Musk wants to design an email service that simplifies everything.

Based on his response, the idea seems to be to create an email system that feels more like a simple direct message (DM) inbox, without the complicated formatting and cluttered threads typical of traditional email. The goal would be to keep email's universal appeal — no need for new apps or contacts — while making it cleaner and easier to use. Essentially, it would streamline the experience, focusing on simplicity and efficiency, like chatting without the mess.
