Significance of Saphala Ekadashi VratSaphala Ekadashi is considered highly beneficial for those seeking spiritual growth, material stability, and liberation from negative karma. Observing this fast with devotion is believed to:
Saphala Ekadashi, observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Pausha month, is considered one of the most powerful Ekadashi fasts dedicated to Lord Vishnu, also worshipped as Lord Narayana. Hindu scriptures describe this Ekadashi as a vrat that removes accumulated sins and grants spiritual success, even to those who observe it unknowingly.
After hearing the greatness of Mokshada Ekadashi, Arjuna humbly requested Lord Shri Krishna to explain the significance of the Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of Pausha. He wished to know its name, the deity worshipped, and the correct method of observing the fast.
In response, Lord Krishna explained that this sacred day is known as Saphala Ekadashi. He revealed that among all fasts, Ekadashi is supreme, just as Lord Vishnu is supreme among all deities. Those who observe Saphala Ekadashi with devotion, night vigil, and offerings such as fruits, coconuts, and sacred food earn immense spiritual merit, equal to thousands of years of penance.
In ancient times, King Mahishmana ruled the prosperous city of Champavati. His eldest son, Lumpaka, however, was cruel, immoral, and deeply sinful. He wasted royal wealth, disrespected saints and devotees, and caused immense suffering to the people.
Unable to tolerate his actions, the king eventually exiled Lumpaka from the kingdom. Abandoned and alone, Lumpaka began living in a forest near a sacred Peepal tree, which was believed to be dear to Lord Vishnu. He survived by committing theft at night and hunting animals during the day.
On the Dashami day before Saphala Ekadashi, Lumpaka suffered greatly due to extreme cold and hunger. He fainted and remained unconscious through the night. On the day of Saphala Ekadashi, weakened and helpless, he could not hunt and instead gathered fallen fruits from the forest floor.
At sunset, feeling remorse and sorrow, he placed the fruits at the base of the Peepal tree and unknowingly offered them to the Lord. That night, he stayed awake, crying in repentance and pain. Without realizing it, Lumpaka observed the Ekadashi fast and night vigil.
Pleased with this unintended devotion, Lord Vishnu destroyed all of Lumpaka’s sins. The next morning, a celestial chariot appeared, and a divine voice announced that Lumpaka had been purified by the grace of Lord Narayana and could return to his kingdom.
Lumpaka returned to his father, narrated the events, and was restored as king. Thereafter, he ruled righteously, became a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, and later renounced worldly life to attain Vaikuntha, the supreme abode.
