Tech billionaire Elon Musk has sparked widespread debate after posting a controversial message on X asserting that womanhood is defined by biology, a remark that underscored sharp divisions over gender identity.

In the post, Musk wrote, “If you have a womb, you are a woman. Otherwise, you are not.”

The comment quickly drew a flood of reactions online. Supporters applauded what they described as a blunt biological view. “Can’t believe we are now in an era to where you had to state the obvious,” one user wrote, prompting Musk to respond, “Seriously!”

Criticism was equally swift. Detractors argued that the statement was “factually inaccurate”, stressing that “sex and gender are different” and that gender identity extends beyond biological characteristics. Some users also pointed to perceived inconsistencies, noting that not all women have wombs due to medical procedures such as hysterectomies.

“A womb is a biological trait, but being a ‘woman’ isn’t limited to anatomy alone — identity, biology, and lived reality are more complex than that.

Simple lines go viral; truth is usually layered,” one user commented.

Musk’s remarks follow his repeated criticism of what he calls “woke” approaches to gender identity and align with his pro-natalist views on reproduction, voiced amid concerns over global fertility rates falling below replacement levels. The exchange highlighted the ongoing tension between traditional biological definitions and more inclusive, contemporary understandings of gender.

Beyond Musk, other prominent figures have echoed pro-natalist messaging. US Vice President JD Vance and several right-wing leaders have publicly urged higher birth rates to counter population decline. Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order pledging support for in vitro fertilisation, recognising “the importance of family formation and that our nation’s public policy must make it easier for loving and longing mothers and fathers to have children”.

The episode reflects how debates around gender, biology and family policy continue to polarise public discourse, particularly on social media platforms such as X.
