OpenAI’s ChatGPT can now remember things you tell it to make future chats more helpful

Whether you're asking for dinner ideas, planning a trip, or just chatting about your day, ChatGPT can now recall helpful bits of information you've shared before.

ChatGPT has now become that friend who always remembers your favorite pizza topping, your dog’s name, or that you’re vegetarian on some days and non vegetarian on some — and will bring them up just when it’s helpful. OpenAI has introduced a new memory feature that lets ChatGPT remember important details from your past conversations to make future chats feel more personal and relevant.

Annoucing the new update, Sam Altman wrote, "We have greatly improved memory in chatgpt--it can now reference all your past conversations! this is a surprisingly great feature imo, and it points at something we are excited about: ai systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalized."

Whether you're asking for dinner ideas, planning a trip, or just chatting about your day, ChatGPT can now recall helpful bits of information you've shared before. So if you once told it that you’re a fan of Thai food or that you live in Mumbai, it might keep that in mind and tailor its suggestions accordingly. Over time, this makes the chatbot feel less like a stranger and more like someone who truly gets you.

What’s cool is that this memory feature works across all kinds of chats — whether you're typing, talking, or asking it to make images. And you can even teach it new things as you go. Just say something like, “Remember that I’m allergic to peanuts,” and ChatGPT will do just that.

Worried about privacy or not feeling ready to share certain details? No problem. You’re totally in control. You can check what ChatGPT remembers by asking, “What do you remember about me?” And if something doesn’t feel right, you can delete individual memories, wipe them all, or even switch off the memory function entirely. Want a clean slate every time? Just use the Temporary Chat option.

Behind the scenes, ChatGPT’s memory works in two ways — by referencing saved memories (things you’ve told it to remember) and your past chats (to pick up useful patterns and preferences). There’s no storage limit for chat history references, but saved memories do have a cap. Still, you’ll be notified if space is running out.

For those using ChatGPT at work or school, there’s good news too — memory storage for Enterprise and Edu users has been expanded by 20% starting February 18, 2025.

So, whether you're a regular user or just getting started, this new feature will make your conversations smoother and more tailored to you.
