Apple Music is now live on ChatGPT, here’s what it can actually do

Apple Music is now available inside ChatGPT, just a day after OpenAI confirmed the integration was on the way. While it does not turn ChatGPT into a music streaming app, the feature adds a powerful new layer of discovery and playlist creation for Apple Music subscribers.

To be clear about what this is and is not, ChatGPT cannot stream full tracks from Apple Music. Users may hear short previews as songs appear in responses, but playback still happens inside Apple Music itself. The real value lies elsewhere.

The integration allows Apple Music subscribers to use ChatGPT to search for music, discover artists, and automatically create playlists through natural language requests. Instead of manually hunting for songs, users can simply describe what they want and let ChatGPT do the work.

In practice, that means you can ask for highly specific playlists. Prompts like “Create a 30-song rock and roll Christmas playlist, but avoid clichés” or “Make Barney’s Get Psyched Mix from How I Met Your Mother” now result in fully formed Apple Music playlists, created and populated automatically. ChatGPT handles the song selection and adds everything directly to the user’s Apple Music library.

The integration also improves music discovery. Users can describe songs vaguely or imperfectly and still get results.

Beyond playlists, the feature opens the door to smarter curation overall. Users can explore genres, moods, soundtracks, or eras without needing to know exact names, making Apple Music feel more conversational and less dependent on precise searches.

Getting started is straightforward. Users can visit chatgpt.com/apps or open the Apps section inside ChatGPT, select Apple Music, and connect their Apple Music account. Once linked, prompts can begin with “/Apple Music” or the app can be selected manually from ChatGPT’s app picker.

In many cases, even that is not necessary. ChatGPT can automatically invoke Apple Music based on context, meaning users can simply ask for a playlist or song without explicitly mentioning the service each time.

The result is a more intuitive way to interact with Apple Music, shifting playlist building and discovery from taps and searches to conversation.
