WhatsApp scam

Scammers are getting smarter. They are now using artificial intelligence to fool people, making it extremely difficult to distinguish real from fake. Recently, a LinkedIn user highlighted a new scam powered by AI. Previously, it was easy to identify a scam message due to poor grammar and typos. The messages were often riddled with errors and awkward phrasing. Today’s AI-powered scammers, however, sound professional, intelligent, and even patient.

Screenshots of this new AI-powered WhatsApp scam were shared by a user named Boobathi Ayyasamy on LinkedIn. The messages he received appeared to be a typical "easy money" job offer, similar to the ones we frequently come across. However, he soon realized something was different. To test the scammer, he asked random questions about history and math, expecting mistakes or inconsistencies. But instead of fumbling, the responses remained flawless, persistent, and eerily on track—something we don’t usually expect from scammers.

That’s when he realized he wasn’t talking to a human. He was chatting with an AI-powered scam bot, trained to keep him engaged and manipulate him into falling for the trap. No typos, no awkward phrasing—just seamless, well-structured responses that made it extremely convincing. Surprisingly, a lot of Linkedin users commented under his posts saying that they have received similar messages on WhatsApp.

Why AI scams are so dangerous

Unlike traditional scammers, AI-driven fraudsters:

– The AI scammers change their response instantly, which makes the conversations feel more natural

– They are pretty good at mimicking human interactions, so you will mostly never encounter a poorly formed sentence or phrase.

– The scammers who use AI usually operate at a very large scale, they are capable of handling thousands of victims at once with zero fatigue.

How to spot AI scammers

So how do you outsmart a scammer who never slips up? Here’s what you can do:

–Be very careful when you receive easy-money job offers on WhatsApp. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

–Look for scripted replies. If someone refuses to engage outside their agenda, it could be AI.

–Ask unexpected questions. AI struggles with complex or abstract topics that aren’t pre-programmed.

–Educate your loved ones. People who are not tech-savvy are prime targets for these schemes.
