WhatsApp wants you to chat beyond WhatsApp
WhatsApp is testing a new feature that lets users message people on other apps. So even if your friend isn’t on WhatsApp, you’ll still be able to talk to them. The feature is currently being tested in Europe and works for texts, photos, videos and documents.

But not every WhatsApp feature will work
Cross-platform chats won’t have everything you’re used to — no status updates, disappearing messages or stickers for now. Also, people you’ve blocked on WhatsApp might still be able to reach you through another app. So, privacy and blocking options may need a rethink.

You can control how you see these chats
WhatsApp will give you the choice to keep these cross-app messages separate or mix them with your regular chats. You’ll also be able to manage notifications and choose whether to receive alerts for messages from other apps or not.

Encryption stays, but privacy may vary
WhatsApp says all messages will still be end-to-end encrypted, but chats from third-party apps could be trickier. Since those apps may have different data rules, it’s smart to stay cautious. If you don’t like the idea, you can simply turn off cross-platform messaging.

You may not get it anytime soon
This feature is still being tested with a small group of users in the EU. WhatsApp plans to roll it out widely there next year. However, features like voice and video calls between apps are expected much later — possibly by 2027.
