The Government of India has rolled out the Passport Seva 2.0 initiative across the country, making the e-passport service available to all citizens. An e-passport is a modernised version of the traditional passport, equipped with a secure electronic chip that holds both biometric and personal data. This move aims to improve travel security, streamline verification, and align with international standards for smoother immigration processing.

What is an e-passport?

An e-passport, or electronic passport, includes an embedded chip on the front cover. This chip stores crucial details such as the passport holder’s name, date of birth, passport number, photograph, and fingerprints. The chip is tamper-resistant and uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, enabling contactless and quicker data reading at immigration counters.

Step-by-step guide to apply online

1. Visit the Passport Seva website
Go to www.passportindia.gov.in to begin the application process.

2. Register or log in
New users must create an account on the Passport Seva portal, while existing users can log in using their credentials.

3. Fill the application form
Select “Apply for Fresh Passport” or “Reissue of Passport” and complete the e-passport application form with accurate information.

4. Book an appointment
Choose your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) and book a convenient date and time.

5. Pay the application fee
Make the payment online through the portal using net banking, UPI, or credit/debit card.

6. Visit the PSK or POPSK
On the scheduled date, visit the centre for biometric data capture, document verification, and photograph collection.
