Dr Joseph Salhab, a US-based gastroenterologist, praised the probiotic drink on his Instagram account, sharing why it’s healthier than even yoghurt.“Kefir is one of the most concentrated natural sources of probiotics available. Compared to regular yogurt, it typically contains a wider variety of beneficial bacterial strains and often a higher number of live cultures per serving,” he wrote.
Praising its benefits for gut health, he added, “There are clinical studies that show that regular kefir intake can help improve constipation, reduce abdominal distension, decrease gas and bloating in some individuals. This can translate to a flatter, more comfortable abdomen, especially by the morning.”
Those who worry that it might not suit them, as they are lactose intolerant, Dr Salhab said that it may not be the case because kefir’s bacteria can break down some of the lactose during fermentation. And so it can help people experience less gas.
While it may be great for health, some people do not enjoy its tangy flavour. And to make it taste better, Dr Salhab suggested adding berries, which are rich in antioxidants. They mask the tang and make it both delicious and highly nutritious.
“Blending it with berries like blueberries or strawberries not only improves the taste, but also adds fibre and polyphenols that support the gut microbiome without significantly increasing bloating. They also naturally balance kefir’s tangy flavour.”
However, if you are lactose intolerant or have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), the gastroenterologist advised introducing the drink gradually into your routine and monitoring your symptoms.
