  • From March 2026, messaging apps in India must link to active SIMs
  • Removing or swapping SIMs may disable app access until reverified
  • Web logins on apps like WhatsApp must refresh every six hours

From March 1, 2026, messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and similar platforms will be required to remain continuously linked to the active SIM card used during registration. The move follows the Department of Telecommunications’ updated Telecom Cyber Security Rules and will significantly change how users in India access and use these apps.

What is SIM binding?

Under the new rule, messaging apps will function only if the registered SIM card is physically present and active inside the smartphone. If the SIM is removed, swapped, deactivated, or replaced without proper re-verification, the app may stop working until the original SIM is reinserted and authentication is completed again.

This effectively ties app access to the primary mobile number and its physical SIM card.

How everyday use will change

For regular users, this means greater restrictions on flexibility. Those who use multiple smartphones with the same account, switch SIM cards frequently, or rely on data-only devices may face interruptions.

If you remove your registered SIM and continue using Wi-Fi, the app may not function until the SIM is reinserted. Users travelling abroad and temporarily switching to local SIM cards could also be affected, as re-verification may be required.

Tablets or secondary devices without SIM support will face tighter limitations unless linked through the primary SIM-based phone.

Impact on web and desktop access

The new rules also affect WhatsApp Web and Telegram Web sessions. Web and desktop logins must automatically log out at least every six hours. Users will then need to rescan the QR code from the phone containing the active SIM.

For professionals, small businesses, and users who keep messaging platforms open on laptops throughout the day, this will introduce repeated logins and added friction.

Security vs convenience

The government says SIM binding aims to reduce fraud, impersonation, and misuse by ensuring that only devices with the original active SIM can access accounts.

However, the change reduces flexibility, particularly for multi-device users and frequent travellers. While the rule strengthens security oversight, it also makes daily messaging usage more tightly controlled and less seamless for Indian users.
