Gone are the days when coding was confined to tech professionals. It is seen as a critical skill fostering problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking—capabilities essential for addressing real-world challenges. Apple has developed initiatives to make coding more accessible and relevant for learners across diverse backgrounds.
The Swift Student Challenge, launched in 2020, which has since attracted thousands of students worldwide. Students from India also have participated in the Challenge. Participants use Swift, the programming language employed by professional developers, to design innovative apps. The program emphasises creativity while imparting practical coding skills, preparing students for a variety of career paths.
Tools like Swift Playgrounds play a pivotal role in Apple’s approach, enabling learners to build apps regardless of their technical expertise. According to Lakshmi Priya, a physics educator and Apple Distinguished Educator at Trio World Academy in Bangalore, “Coding encourages computational thinking, helping students turn abstract concepts into tangible solutions. For example, my students simulate physical phenomena like gravity or design rocket launch models, blending theory with application.”
The impact of coding in education aligns with the goals of the Apple Distinguished Schools (ADS) program, which recognises institutions integrating Apple technology into learning. During this year’s Computer Science Week, four new schools joined the program, showcasing innovative approaches to education using iPads and Macs.
At Mount Litera School International, students collaborated during Coding Week to design apps and games. One group created a mental well-being app prototype, merging coding with empathy and problem-solving. Priya Anand, Head of School, highlights how Apple’s resources made coding inclusive and engaging for learners, fostering teamwork and innovation. “Our teachers, empowered by Apple professional learning resources and using Swift Playgrounds, led hands-on sessions, making coding accessible and inclusive for every learner,” she said.
Vinod Singh, Head of Trio World Academy, echoed similar sentiments. “Becoming an Apple Distinguished School has redefined learning. Events like Code Week showcase how coding can drive collaboration and creativity, empowering students to tackle real-world problems.”
