Google has introduced a new text-to-speech feature in Google Docs using its Gemini AI, allowing users to create audio versions of their documents. This update, initially previewed earlier this year, is now rolling out on the web and aims to make reading, editing, and reviewing documents more interactive and accessible.
The new feature appears in the Tools menu as an “Audio” option, positioned between Voice typing and Gemini. Selecting “Listen to this tab” opens a pill-shaped player that displays the duration of the document. The floating player can be moved anywhere on the screen for convenience and includes standard controls such as play, pause, and a scrubber to skip through sections.
Users can also adjust the playback speed and choose from a variety of natural-sounding voices tailored for different tones and purposes. Available voice options include Narrator, Educator, Teacher, Persuader, Explainer, Coach, and Motivator, allowing listeners to customise how the document is read.
Editors can also insert an audio button directly into the document, making it accessible for anyone viewing it. This can be done via the Insert menu by selecting Audio buttons and then Listen to tab. Google notes that the feature is useful for hearing content aloud, improving information retention, and spotting errors in writing.
The audio function is currently available in English on the web and will gradually roll out over the coming weeks. It is accessible to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, as well as Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and customers using Gemini Education or Business add-ons, including their premium versions.
In addition to audio capabilities, Google Docs on Android is receiving an update to generate images directly within documents. This feature is also limited to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, further enhancing Google Docs as a versatile content creation and collaboration platform.
The introduction of Gemini audio in Google Docs reflects a broader push towards AI-powered productivity tools. By converting text into speech, Google is helping users absorb information differently, offering an alternative to traditional reading. This could be particularly useful for students, professionals, and anyone who prefers auditory learning or needs to review long documents efficiently.
With these updates, Google Docs continues to strengthen its position as a leading online word processor, combining traditional document editing with innovative AI features. Users can expect more such integrations in the future as AI becomes increasingly central to productivity workflows.
