Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai believes that one of the most valuable decisions a young professional can make is to work alongside people who inspire them to improve. Speaking on the Lex Fridman podcast, Pichai said he has sought out colleagues whose skills and expertise exceeded his own throughout his career. This, he explained, forces a person to step up, adapt, and develop in ways they might not have thought possible.
Pichai joined Google in 2004 as a product manager and rose through the ranks to become CEO in 2015. He recalls that at many stages, he worked with individuals who he considered “better” than himself in certain areas. “When you are in an environment where others are pushing boundaries, it naturally pushes you to grow too,” he said.
Why Gen Z should embrace discomfortTo the younger workforce, especially those just starting their careers, Pichai advises deliberately seeking out challenging environments. “Put yourself in situations where you feel a little intimidated,” he suggested. “You’ll often be surprised at how much you can achieve when you’re outside your comfort zone.”
Pichai also pointed out that top performers are often their own toughest critics. He has seen employees hold themselves accountable more strongly than any manager might, a trait he believes drives excellence. This mindset, he said, often makes formal reprimands unnecessary, as such individuals are already committed to improving their work.
Passion over pure logicWhile skill and discipline matter, Pichai urged young professionals not to overlook passion. He said that career decisions should balance practicality with genuine enjoyment. “Listen to your heart,” he advised. “If you truly enjoy what you’re doing, your work naturally gets better over time.”
Building mission-driven teams
At the leadership level, Pichai prioritises assembling mission-focused teams. In his view, when talented individuals with shared goals work together, the results can be transformative. He believes that a combination of high personal standards, passion, and a willingness to learn from others creates an environment where innovation thrives.
For Pichai, surrounding yourself with people who push you is not just career advice—it’s a formula for continuous growth, resilience, and long-term success
