The Walking Dead is coming to World War Z, here’s how

The Walking Dead characters to arrive in World War Z

Zombie stories and games enthusiasts, how would you like The Walking Dead to have a crossover with World War Z? A combination of slow and fast zombies in the same world? It’s happening and soon. The two zombie franchises will merge when the characters of AMC’s groundbreaking zombie TV show The Walking Dead arrive as playable characters in Saber Interactive’s undead shooter World War Z. The Walking Dead characters will be added as part of the upcoming “World War Z x The Walking Dead DLC” for PS5 and PS4, due out in January 2026, Saber Interactive announced in a PlayStation Blog post.

The list of characters to arrive as part of the DLC includes leading men and women from AMC's The Walking Dead television series, like Sheriff Rick Grimes, Michonne, Daryl Dixon and Negan. They will have their signature weapons to use in the game, too. For example, Daryl will have his crossbow while Rick will get to use his revolver. Michonne can hack the oncoming zombies into pieces with her katana, while Negan can wield his infamous baseball bat “Lucille” wrapped in barbed wire, the weapon he named after his deceased wife. If you play as Jeffery Dean Morgan’s character, here's hoping ‘Lucille’ gives you strength. In addition to their signature weapons from the TV show, they will also be using the weapons from the World War Z game, such as mounted machine guns.

For the World War Z x The Walking Dead DLC, maps will be similarly-sized to those in World War Z so far, but the routes will be “more narrow and claustrophobic”, said the developers.

The World War Z DLC will feature the special Zekes (Bulls, Bombers, etc.) as threats and it also adds a new threat in the form of the Spiked Walker. This new zombie comes with an armoured head; if you get too close to this special zombie, you’ll get hurt and start bleeding. Your best option is to take it down with a ranged attack so that it falls on the ground. While it is lying prone, you go and finish it off.

The World War Z x The Walking Dead DLC adds a new campaign episode with three separate chapters featuring characters from AMC’s The Walking Dead – Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Negan, and Michonne. Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus have voiced their respective revered characters for the upcoming World War Z content pack.
