Google brings Gemini-powered AI review summaries to Play Store, months after Apple and Amazon

Google is finally rolling out an AI-driven review summarisation feature to the Play Store, powered by its Gemini model. The feature aims to help users quickly understand what others think about an app without scrolling through hundreds of reviews. According to a report from Android Authority, the AI-generated summaries are now being rolled out widely, though availability appears to vary by region and device.

The summaries were first spotted in Play Store version 48.5.23-31, but not all users have access yet, suggesting Google is taking a phased rollout approach.

The Gemini-powered summaries condense the most common pros and cons of an app into a short, easy-to-read paragraph. Located under the “Ratings and reviews” section, the feature appears with the heading “Users are saying,” followed by a brief AI-generated summary and a disclaimer that reads, “Summarised by Google AI.”

Beneath the main summary, users can interact with “chips” — quick filters such as “user interface,” “performance,” or “file management” — to see reviews tied to specific aspects of the app. The goal is to make it faster for users to decide whether an app is worth downloading, without sifting through lengthy or repetitive feedback.

While the rollout strengthens Google’s AI presence across its ecosystem, it’s not the first to offer this kind of feature. Apple introduced AI-generated review summaries for the App Store back in April, and Amazon has been using a similar system for product reviews on its platform for several months.

Google’s move, however, signals a broader integration of Gemini across its core services. The company is clearly looking to leverage AI not just for search or chat but also for improving user experience in app discovery and decision-making.

Google’s AI initiatives haven’t always gone smoothly. When it first launched AI Overviews in Search, the system went viral for bizarre suggestions– including telling users to put glue on pizza or eat rocks for nutrients. Since then, Google has refined the tool, and it’s now a stable part of the search experience. The company also introduced “AI Mode,” which lets users interact with a chatbot-style interface directly in Search.

By bringing Gemini to the Play Store, Google is expanding its AI reach, but this time, it seems to be taking a careful, phased approach to ensure stability before a full release.
