Google is adding a new feature to its Gemini app that lets users edit images using artificial intelligence. Whether it's a photo you've uploaded from your phone or one you've created using AI, you can now modify it directly within the app—no need for any extra software.

This means you can do things like change the background of a photo, add or remove objects, or even see how you’d look with a different hairstyle or hair color. Want to turn a plain selfie into something more fun or imaginative? Gemini can help with that, all with simple prompts.

This update builds on Google’s earlier launch of native AI image editing in its AI Studio. After receiving positive feedback, the company is now rolling out the same tools in the more widely used Gemini app, making it accessible to more users around the world.

What makes this tool stand out is its ability to combine both text and image-based interactions. For example, you could ask Gemini to create a bedtime story about dragons and also generate images to go along with the story—all in one place. This opens up more creative possibilities for users, whether they’re storytellers, content creators, or just having fun.

Google says all AI-edited images will include the invisible SynthID watermark to indicate they were generated or modified using AI. The company is also testing a visible watermark to make this even clearer.

The feature is rolling out gradually starting today and will soon be available in over 45 languages and in most countries.
