DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: How the Chinese AI chatbot compares to ChatGPT in responses, privacy, search and more

DeepSeek has become the hotshot of the AI chatbot with its faster responses and coding capabilities. However, ChatGPT isn't that bad and behind when it compares to the DeepSeek. We've compared both to offer you an idea on what both offers and which is the right one for you.

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT

DeepSeek, the latest AI chatbot in the market, has managed to gain a lot of momentum around the globe. So much so that people have already started comparing and declaring it a better AI chatbot compared to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and even Google Gemini.

Artificial intelligence chatbots have become essential tools for users looking for assistance with research, writing, problem-solving, and general queries. OpenAI's ChatGPT has been a widely recognised name in this space, while DeepSeek, a Chinese AI system, has recently entered the market with its own capabilities.

To make things easier for you, we’ve compared the ChatGPT, between these two models providing insight into their strengths, weaknesses, and usability for different types of users.

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: Subscription charges and availability
One of the biggest differences between the two chatbots is the subscription pricing. Both DeepSeek and ChatGPT offer free access for users, with premium plans available for enhanced functionality. ChatGPT here is significantly more expensive at a $20 per month starting price, whereas DeepSeek offers a more affordable model beginning at $0.50 per month. Additionally, DeepSeek claims to operate at a significantly lower cost per token compared to OpenAI’s models.

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: Speed and capabilities
Well, both are chatbots with their LLMs (large language models). That makes their functionalities similar but both have their own way of processing things. ChatGPT has been there for a while and hence it has learnt more and has been trained more based on users’ input, DeepSeek is relatively new and has certain restrictions when it comes to data access and knowledgebase.

However, DeepSeek is much faster with responses compared to ChatGPT, especially in handling programming-related tasks, particularly in languages like Python and Java, and is designed to solve mathematical problems effectively. However, its responses may be limited when addressing politically sensitive topics due to content moderation policies. For instance, DeepSeek does not like to talk about China-related queries.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, is well-suited for tasks that require creativity, such as storytelling.  It also has a more comprehensive understanding of global events and can provide updates on recent news when web access is enabled.

Now, it is not like DeepSeek can’t do these things, but ChatGPT is slightly better and it might have to do with the database it has.

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT: Real-world scenarios
When it comes to using AI chatbots, most people use it to get things done faster. So, we tried doing some day-to-day stuff with the ChatGPT and DeepSeek and here’s what we’ve found.

Planning a trip
When tested with itinerary planning for a trip, both chatbots generated structured plans. ChatGPT provided suggestions for high-end hotels and included estimated costs, offering a more detailed breakdown of expenses. DeepSeek’s itinerary focused on meal recommendations and specific menu items but lacked cost estimates. One thing that I liked about ChatGPT is that there’s more information available for users. The good thing is that you can ask DeepSeek to add more data.

Not only this, but we also asked it to help me pack for the trip. Both did a good job with a different approach. DeepSeek was more precise with the things and it also specified things to pack for Safari Essentials, while ChatGPT missed out on it which it should have as it is one of the most interesting activities to do in Ranthambore. On the contrary, ChatGPT is far more specific. Other than this, both offer Pro tips as well.

So, both did a good job when it came to helping to plan and pack for a trip.

DeepSeek has taken an open-source approach, allowing broader accessibility and collaboration within the AI community. However, as a China-based AI model, it follows content regulations that restrict certain political topics. When asked about international political relations, it redirected the conversation to neutral topics like coding and mathematics.

ChatGPT does not impose country-specific restrictions but has faced legal challenges regarding data privacy and copyright concerns. It has been involved in lawsuits related to content generation and the potential misuse of proprietary data.

Which is the right AI chatbot for you

Selecting between DeepSeek and ChatGPT depends on user needs. DeepSeek is useful for those requiring technical problem-solving, coding assistance, and logical reasoning tasks. It provides structured explanations and step-by-step problem-solving methods.

ChatGPT is more suitable for users who need engaging responses, creative content, and up-to-date information. Its ability to provide conversational and well-structured narratives makes it preferable for casual and professional writing tasks.
