Apple rolls out important iOS update to protect  iPhones from USB hacking threats

Apple has released iOS 18.3.1, a minor update that addresses a critical security vulnerability affecting iPhones and iPads. The update, which also includes iPadOS 18.3.1, was released to the public today, following reports that the vulnerability had been actively exploited by attackers.

The security flaw, identified as CVE-2025-24200, was found in the accessibility features of iOS. Attackers with physical access to a locked device could disable USB Restricted Mode, a feature designed to prevent unauthorized access to data via USB connections.

By bypassing this security measure, attackers could potentially access sensitive user data stored on the device.

Apple's security update document states that the vulnerability was addressed with improved state management. The company also mentioned that it was aware of a report indicating that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack targeting specific individuals.

“A physical attack may disable USB Restricted Mode on a locked device. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals,” noted Apple on its support page.

To keep your iPhone safe from any potential threat, it is advised to update your devices to the latest version. To update your device, go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the on-screen instructions.

In addition to iOS 18.3.1, Apple also released updates for macOS 15, visionOS 2, and watchOS 11, although no specific security patches were mentioned for these operating systems.

For older devices that are not compatible with iPadOS 18, Apple released iPadOS 17.7.5 with the same security fix.
