Wimbledon: What is it?

The All England Club in southwest London hosts Wimbledon on grass courts with retractable roofs on Centre Court and No. 1 Court. Men play best-of-five sets with a tiebreaker at 6-all in the fifth set, while women play best-of-three-set matches with a first-to-10 tiebreaker at 6-all in the third set. Wimbledon features an 11 p.m. curfew and no night sessions, in contrast to the U.S. Open, Australian Open, and French Open. The U.S. Open will join the Australian Open and French Open later this year in becoming a 15-day event, beginning on Sunday rather than Monday. This is the final Grand Slam event with a 14-day competitive period.

Barbora Krejcikova won her second Grand Slam championship and her first at the All England Club last year after defeating Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the final. Carlos Alcaraz won his second straight Wimbledon title and his fourth Slam overall after defeating seven-time Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4).  Since then, at the age of 22, Alcaraz has added a fifth Grand Slam victory to his resume.

Who are the All England Club's top seeds?

The top-seeded male and female are Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka, respectively. The WTA and ATP rankings are followed by the seedings, which were announced on Thursday. At the All England Club, who else plays?

Day 1 will begin with Aryna Sabalenka taking on Carson Branstine, a 24-year-old Californian representing Canada who assisted Texas A&M in winning the 2024 NCAA women's championship, at No. 1 Court at 1 p.m. local time (8 a.m. ET). Line judges will be replaced by electronic line-calling during games for the first time by the All England Club. With this modification, Wimbledon will now be in line with the Australian Open and U.S. Open, making the French Open the sole Grand Slam event with human line judges—at least for the time being.
