The two-time Olympic javelin medalist Chopra will compete on June 24 in the Czech Republic at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 sports meet. He will finally try to make his debut at the famous event after having to withdraw from the previous two editions owing to injuries.
However, he was a special visitor at the location last year. The fact that his renowned instructor Jan Zelezny's native country will host the event adds even more significance.
“I am excited to announce that I will take part in the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava this year. It’s a legendary race and this year will be exceptional. My coach Jan Zelezny has not only won there many times, but also acts as the director of the whole event,” he added.
“I feel great and I hope you will see really nice and far-reaching feasts. I look forward to meeting you all,” Chopra said in a press release issued by the tournament organisers.
In terms of worldwide athletics relevance, the Golden Spike event, which was founded in 1961 and is a part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold label, comes in just below the Diamond League.
Chopra, the current world champion and silver medallist at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, will compete in the Doha Diamond League on May 16.
He has chosen not to compete in the Asian Athletics Championships, which will take place in Gumi, South Korea, from May 27 to May 31. Big names will compete in the men's javelin event at Ostrava, including Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, the silver medallist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
