Lionel Messi is out indefinitely following confirmation on Tuesday that he sustained a ligament injury to his right ankle during the Copa América final, as announced by Inter Miami.
In a statement, the club announced, "After a medical assessment, it has been determined that Leo Messi has suffered a ligament injury in his right ankle. His availability will be subject to ongoing evaluations and the progress of his recovery."
Earlier on Tuesday, Miami coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino had indicated that Messi would likely miss at least the next two matches for the club. Inter Miami's upcoming fixtures include hosting Toronto FC on Wednesday night and Chicago Fire on Saturday night, followed by their defense of the Leagues Cup title beginning July 27 in Puebla.
"He twisted his ankle, and the injury is evident, so tests are required while we await results," Martino explained. "I've had the chance to review other images. Further tests will determine the severity of the injury. Our kinesiologist Walter Insaurralde, who also works with the national team, keeps us updated and remains cautious before making any final diagnosis."
Messi, aged 37, had to leave the field in tears during Argentina's 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa América final on Sunday, after falling in the 64th minute. Initially down for a few minutes, he eventually removed his right boot and left the field slowly. Later, he was seen with a heavily swollen right ankle and was visibly emotional, covering his face and sobbing while seated on the bench.
In an Instagram post on Monday, Messi reassured fans, saying he was feeling better and hoped to make a swift return.
