Alyssa Healy’s UP Warriorz will take on Beth Mooney’s Gujarat Giants in the 18th match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday, March 11. The toss will take place at 7pm India time and the first ball is scheduled for 7.30pm.
WPL 2024 Gujarat Giants vs UP Warriorz: Playoffs race – what the teams need to do
Harmanpreet Kaur’s fiery 48-ball 95 not-out on Saturday not only sent her side, the Mumbai Indians, through to the playoffs, but the knock also dealt Giants’ hopes of qualifying for the playoffs a severe blow. The Royal Challengers Bangalore’s one-run defeat to the Delhi Capitals on Sunday meant the currently bottom-placed Giants are still theoretically alive in the knockouts race of the five-team competition, albeit only marginally.
The Warriorz, meanwhile, will be looking to finish their league-stage campaign on a high, for a win could take them closer to finishing third on the points table, and if they have a superior net run rate to the Royal Challengers should both teams eventually end up on six or eight points, the Warriorz will find themselves playing the Eliminator in the knockouts for a second straight season.
WPL 2024 Gujarat Giants vs UP Warriorz: Recent form and previous encounter
The Warriorz are coming off a one-run triumph over the Capitals while the Giants lost their last match to Mumbai by seven wickets with one ball to spare.
In the previous encounter between the two sides, in Bengaluru, the Warriorz cruised to a six-wicket win with 26 balls to spare, courtesy a 33-ball 60 from the big-hitting Grace Harris and a three-for from left-arm-spinner Sophie Ecclestone.
WPL 2024 Gujarat Giants vs UP Warriorz: Players to watch out for
Beth Mooney struck half-centuries in back-to-back matches of the Giants to kick off the New Delhi leg of their WPL campaign. The 30-year-old Australian batter, who has won multiple World Cups and a Commonwealth Games gold and also keeps for the Giants, made an unbeaten 85 against the Royal Challengers in a winning cause and 66 against Mumbai in a losing cause.
Grace Harris, a fearsome force with the bat, defended 10 off the last over to hand the Warriorz an improbable win against the Capitals. The offspinner’s efforts with the ball have come in handy at all phases of an innings at WPL 2024 so far, with captain Healy using her to open the innings, operate in the middle overs, and also bowl at the death.
