India’s batting collapse in Guwahati on Monday seems to have prompted a statement so sharp that it suggested Virat Kohli might have retired from the wrong format. India were skittled for a mere 201 in the final Test against South Africa, following which the visitors extended their lead to 314 by the end of Day 3 at Barsapara Stadium.
Ex-India cricketer Sreevats Goswami went on X to convey that Kohli ought to have left ODI cricket, as per his view that Test cricket is in dire need of the intensity and fighting spirit which the side used to have with him.
In a move that took everyone by surprise, Kohli decided to call it quits to Test cricket in May only five days after Rohit Sharma had done the same. Before this, both players had retired from T20Is after the World Cup in June last year and are currently only playing ODI cricket.
“Ideally Virat should have left playing ODIs & continued playing test cricket until he had nothing to give. Test cricket misses him. Not just as a player but just the energy he brought, the love & passion playing for India where he made the team believe that they can win in any condition,” Goswami wrote.
He had echoed a similar sentiment earlier as well, noting: “The winning mentality & that fire which was there under Virat Kohli feels missing in this team.”
