Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) registered their third consecutive victory by crushing fellow five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 9 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
Riding on unbeaten blitzkrieg knocks by Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, MI chased down the 177-run target with more than four overs to spare.
With this win, MI avenged their four-wicket loss against CSK that they had suffered in the third match of this edition at the Chepauk on March 23. This is just the second win for MI against CSK in the last eight IPL games and the first win after four consecutive defeats.
Here are the five key moments that defined the El Clasico of the IPL:
New kid on the block:
Ayush Mhatre made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings scoring 32 runs. Batting at No. 3 for CSK after being put into bat, Mhatre smashed 2 sixes and 4 fours in his 15-ball 32 before he was caught by Mitchell Santner off Deepak Chahar.
At 17 years and 278 days Ayush Mhatre became the youngest player to represent CSK in the IPL. Mhatre made a memorable start to his IPL stint by slamming a four and two consecutive sixes off Ashwani Kumar in the fourth over of the match.

The CSK run charge:
Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube hit fiery fifties to power CSK to 176/5. Dube reached his fifty first off 30 balls with the help of 4 sixes and 2 fours. This was Dube’s first 50-plus score in his last 14 IPL innings.
Jadeja top scored for CSK with an unbeaten 53-run knock that came off 35 balls, hitting 2 sixes and 4 fours. Jadeja and Dube took 24 runs off one over by Ashwani Kumar. Jadeja also registered his first 50-plus score in his last 14 IPL innings.
Bumrah wins the battle against Dhoni:
MI pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Dube just when the left-hander was threatening to cut loose after reaching his fifty. Dube’s dismissal brought MS Dhoni to the crease in the 17th over.
The CSK captain faced 2 balls from Bumrah in the over and scored 2 runs. In the next over, bowled by Mitchell Santner, Dhoni again took two singles, as the Kiwi spinner tied down both Jadeja and Dhoni conceding just 6 runs off the over.
Bumrah came back for the next over and dismissed Dhoni on the fourth ball, having him caught by Tilak Varma at backward square leg. Dhoni fell for 4 depriving the CSK fans of any fireworks in the death overs.

Rohit roars back to form:
Impact player Rohit Sharma smashed his way back to form by scoring his first fifty of the season – off 33 balls. Rohit looked determined right from the start of his innings and applied himself as well after taking his side off to a flier.
The former MI captain joined the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and David Warner to score most fifties against CSK – 9. Rohit, who dropped anchor after the blazing start, remained unbeaten on 45-ball 76, that was studded with 6 sixes and 4 fours. 6 sixes is the joint-most Rohit hit in an IPL innings. After reaching his fifty, Rohit changed gears once more and hammered the CSK bowlers to all corners of the Wankhede.
Rohit (6786) also overtook Shikhar Dhawan (6769) to become the second-highest run-getter in the IPL.
SKY’s support role:
Suryakumar Yadav was promoted to the No. 3 spot in the batting order and he totally justified the call by smashing 5 sixes and 6 fours in his unbeaten 30-ball 68.
SKY reached his 50 off 26 balls and alongwith Rohit brought up the first century stand for MI this season off just 51 deliveries and finished the match with a six.
The Rohit-SKY unbeaten 114-run stand for the second wicket is the fourth century partnership for MI against CSK.
