IPL 2024 playoffs race heat-up and CSK is one of the teams eyeing a spot in knockout stage

With only eight games remaining in the league stage of IPL 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders stand as the lone qualifier for the playoffs, leaving three spots up for grabs. Let's break down the scenarios for the teams still in contention.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

RCB's recent surge, clinching five consecutive wins including a crucial victory against DC, has propelled them to fifth place on the points table. They currently sit on 12 points, with a chance to reach 14 when they face CSK next Saturday. However, their playoff hopes hinge on other results, as both SRH and LSG could potentially surpass them with 16 points each. If the RCB-CSK clash becomes a knockout game, RCB would need to win by a significant margin to surpass CSK's net run rate.

Chennai Super Kings

Despite a recent win against RR bringing them closer to a playoffs berth, CSK's qualification is far from guaranteed. If they lose to RCB and remain on 14 points, four other teams could still overtake them. However, their superior net run rate puts them in a favorable position, needing a win against RCB in their final game to secure a top-four finish.

Delhi Capitals

DC's defeat to RCB has severely dented their net run rate, making it unlikely for them to finish among the top four, even if they reach 14 points. Their slim playoff hopes rely on other teams suffering significant defeats in their remaining matches.

Rajasthan Royals

Despite three consecutive defeats, RR remains in contention for a playoff spot. They need at least one win in their remaining matches to solidify their position, with LSG being the only potential threat to their net run rate.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

With a solid net run rate, SRH's qualification seems likely with just one win in their remaining games. However, two losses could jeopardize their chances, especially if both CSK and RCB finish ahead of them on net run rate.

Lucknow Super Giants

LSG's poor net run rate means they require 16 points to contend for a playoff spot. Even then, their chances are slim, as both CSK and SRH boast superior net run rates. It's improbable for them to catch up with RR even if the latter loses both remaining matches.

Gujarat Titans

Despite having the potential to reach 14 points, Titans' abysmal net run rate makes it highly unlikely for them to challenge for a playoff position.
