Being the son of former New Zealand rugby union player and coach John Mitchell, the New Zealand batter understood the dynamics of team sport. Daryl Mitchell became a talking point after his unbeaten 72 in the T20 World Cup semifinal against England in Abu Dhabi three years ago.
Chasing a target of 168, New Zealand needed 34 off 18 when the right-hander showed his brilliance to guide his team through to the final.
Daryl Mitchell was part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for two years with Rajasthan Royals, but he only played two matches and scored 33 runs. He found his mojo during the ODI World Cup in India, where he smashed 552 runs in 10 appearances.
Chennai Super Kings shelled out Rs 14 crore to buy his services. Mitchell is also a handy seamer who can swing the ball. He was the replacement for Colin de Grandhomme in New Zealand in 2019. He has 76 scalps in 195 T20 matches.
With Daryl Mitchell, CSK can field seven all-rounders in the playing XI. There is Rachin Ravindra, Shivam Dube, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Mitchell Santner and Ravindra Jadeja.
The batter can move up and down the order based on vacancies. He has played as an opener too. Earlier this year, Mitchell hit another unbeaten 72 off 44 against Pakistan in Christchurch while batting at No 4.
Mitchell is known for his finishing skills, and he will be keen to learn under Dhoni.
