Although Ravi Ghai has a lengthy history in India's upscale hospitality and culinary sectors, neither a new hotel opening nor a commercial transaction is currently making headlines. It is his granddaughter Saaniya Chandhok, who on Wednesday got engaged to Arjun Tendulkar, the son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. A private engagement ceremony brought together two prominent families from Mumbai, one renowned for their five-star hospitality and ice cream empires, and the other for their cricketing prowess.
Ghai's portfolio as chairman of the Graviss Group is a veritable list of influential figures in the hospitality industry. He is the owner of the iconic InterContinental Hotel on Marine Drive in Mumbai, which he converted from the former Natraj Hotel into a luxurious haven. His influence extends far beyond hotels. In 1993, he introduced Baskin-Robbins to India and the SAARC area, and guided businesses like Kwality and Brooklyn Creamery, making the international flavors a staple here.

Ghai, a Cornell University School of Hotel Administration alumnus, has spent decades fusing global expertise with Indian business acumen. He returned to Mumbai in 1967 and assumed control of the company.
Under his direction, Graviss Food Solutions Private Limited recorded FY23–24 revenues of almost Rs 583 crore as per Accumn, which is approximately 20 percent increase from the previous year. The group's commercial activities span both mass-market food and luxury hospitality, and its estimated net worth is between Rs 800-1,000 crore.
Ghai's path has been influenced by both reinvention and continuity. He extended the Gaylord restaurant chain, started The Brooklyn Creamery to appeal to a younger, health-conscious demographic, and continued his father's tradition with Kwality Ice Cream.
Additionally, he has kept a strong global perspective by forming partnerships that have exposed Indian consumers to multinational brands and high-end service standards.
But it's not all positive headlines. About a month ago, Ghai had personal turmoil, most notably a disagreement with his son Gaurav, whom he accused of taking over the Graviss Group while he was undergoing cancer treatment. He accused him of forging his signature, committing fraud, seizing control of the company, and cutting off his monthly allowances during his cancer treatment. Police handled the case as a family dispute, and it is now in arbitration.
Despite these obstacles, it is difficult to overestimate Ghai's impact on the Indian hospitality industry. He has been a pioneer in luxury service, a negotiator for international partnerships, and a guardian of legacy brands since joining the family firm in the 1960s. His creations have influenced many facets of Indian life, whether it is a container of ice cream in a corner store or a hotel suite with a view of the Arabian Sea.
Now that his granddaughter has been engaged to Arjun Tendulkar, Ravi Ghai is caught between business news, social media, and cricket chatter.
