Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of India, was happy as his team defeated Australia in the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, preventing them from registering a whitewash in the series. In addition to praising seamer Harshit Rana's spell with the ball to set up the chase for India, Gambhir praised the unbeaten 168-run partnership between veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
After a strong start, India lost skipper Shubman Gill while chasing 237, and then the experienced combo of Rohit and Virat skillfully pulled the game away from Australia. Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the all-time top run scorer in limited-overs internationals, while Rohit scored his 50th international century with his 33rd ODI century.

Both former captains of India had not played since June 2025 going into the series, but they showed their genius to end it. Rohit's form gradually improved over the course of three innings, but Kohli's undefeated effort of 74 not out put an end to two consecutive ducks and sealed the victory for India.

Gambhir praised Rohit and Kohli for their mature handling of the chase in a dressing room video that the BCCI posted on social media. As the most successful visiting ODI batsman in Australia with six hundreds, Rohit said goodbye to Australian soil with his 121 not out off 135 balls. Adrian Le Roux, the team's strength and conditioning coach, presented Rohit with the "Impact Player of the Match" medal in the dressing room.
