Pakistan qualified for the Asia Cup 2025 final after engaging in a low-scoring thriller against Bangladesh in the Super Four match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday. The team led by Salman Ali Agha will play arch-rivals India in the final on Sunday.

In the meeting against Bangladesh, which was a virtual knockout tie, Pakistan were invited to bat first and they got off to a shaky start after losing early wickets, which was followed by a sluggish middle phase. Credit to the lower order, featuring Mohammad Haris, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammad Nawaz, whose lusty blows helped Pakistan to a modest 135/8 in 20 overs — a total the bowlers could only hope to defend.

Despite Pakistan's strong bowling attack, the analysts and supporters felt that the remaining total was too low to defend. But Shaheen Afridi chose to take charge and gave his team a fantastic start by taking early wickets, thus putting Bangladesh under pressure something from which they could not recover.

Following their lead pacer's example, the rest of the team stepped up, taking wickets at regular intervals and stifling the opposition's scoring pace.

Bangladesh's chase quickly got out of control, and they ultimately lost the match by 11 runs after managing 124 at the end of 20 overs.

The scoreboard will give the impression that Pakistan's defence of the modest target was flawless. That was not the case, though. In the sixth over of the run chase, the fielding unit gave a huge let-off.

The non-striker Saif Hassan, started for a quick single after Towhid Hridoy tapped a ball with gentle hands from Shaheen Afridi towards Saim Ayub at point. But Hridoy remained in his crease, which caused major confusion.

The two batters eventually found themselves at the same end of the crease. Saim Ayub threw the ball towards the non-striker's end, which missed the stumps, and with no one backing up at the stumps it went to the backup fielder at mid-on. It allowed Hassan to get back to his crease and denied Pakistan an easy run-out chance.

The moment saw former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan take a brutal swipe at Pakistan on commentary.

Pathan said, "Aisi galti umeed karte hain aap Pakistan se. Dono hi batsman ek hi end pe hone ke bawajood run-out na ho, yeh darshata hain ki Pakistan fielding kar rahi hain (You expect these kind of mistakes from Pakistan. With both the batters at one end when there is a missed run-out chance, it shows that Pakistan are fielding)."

Irfan Pathan has often been engaged in online spats with former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, so his latest dig at India’s rivals comes as no surprise to the fans.
