The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to close 2024 with a bold step in space exploration. On 30 December 2024, at 9:58 PM IST, ISRO will launch the SpaDeX mission aboard the PSLV-C60, showcasing India’s first in-space docking technology.

SpaDeX: India’s First Docking Experiment

The SpaDeX mission will demonstrate docking technology using two satellites. Named SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), they will dock in low Earth orbit. This achievement will support future lunar missions and plans for a national space station.

Fifteen minutes post-launch, the Target satellite will separate. Shortly after, the Chaser will follow, performing velocity adjustments to close the 10-20 km gap. Controlled manoeuvres will guide their docking, expected in January 2025. ISRO highlights this as a milestone in space technology, vital for interplanetary missions and satellite servicing.
