Indian astronaut Shubhnashu Shukla recently shared a video showing unusual white nights in orbit. These rare moments occur when the sun never fully sets. The video reveals the fascinating effects of high beta angle phases.

Space travellers frequently see several sunrises and sunsets in one day. But occasionally, the sun never appears to set. This curious event occurs during high beta angle phases.

What Is the Beta Angle and Why Does It Matter?

The beta angle is the key factor. It measures the sun’s position versus the orbital plane. A zero-degree beta means half the orbit is dark. Ninety degrees means continuous sunlight. However, continuous light can happen even below ninety degrees. The sun appears to set but never fully disappears.

How High Beta Affects Space Operations

Recently, astronauts arrived at the station during a high beta period. The beta angle exceeded sixty degrees. During such phases, docking and undocking are avoided. High thermal stress makes these operations risky. In space shuttle days, "barbecue mode" managed thermal issues. The shuttle rolled slowly in free flight. This method still applies to free-flying vehicles. Docking processes, however, are too slow for rolling.

Why Solar Arrays Face Restrictions in High Beta

Solar arrays must always adjust for power needs. But high beta limits their movement. Uneven thermal stress affects structural stability. This forces restricted positioning of solar panels. As a result, power management becomes more challenging.

What Was the Outcome of These Constraints?

The combined effect of thermal stress and array limits added four days in orbit. The extra days allowed scientists more study time. Astronauts handled the situation without complaint. The white night in space reminds us of unique challenges. It demonstrates why space operations require careful planning.
