New study maps highest shark population in Eastern Pacific Islands

A new gamma-ray analysis from the Milky Way’s centre may offer the most promising hint yet of dark matter, though scientists urge caution.

A major survey reveals a stark divide. Extensive survey of Eastern tropical Pacific finds remote protected areas harbor some of the highest concentrations of sharks. It covers seven major marine protected areas.

Sharp Ecosystem Contrast

The researchers found remote islands host exceptionally high shark populations. Areas such as Galápagos, Malpelo, Clipperton and Revillagigedo showed dense populations of sharks.

Coastal MPAs showed worrying depletion of sharks and large predators. The study highlights remoteness and strict protection sustain healthy populations. This survey is the first comprehensive assessment across seven MPAs.

Who conducted the study?

Dr. Pelayo Salinas-de-León is a Principal Investigator at the Charles Darwin Foundation and senior author of the study. He said, “these areas provide a glimpse of what a healthy ocean looks like and highlight the key role ocean conservation plays in safeguarding these last strongholds from systematic overfishing”.

Different Sharks, Different Zones

Different sharks were seen in different zones. The southern sites show more scalloped hammerheads whereas, the northern sites hold more silvertip sharks. Each zone reflects local ocean conditions. Currents and temperatures shaped the predator's presence.

How was this research conducted?

The team used BRUV systems to monitor sharks and predators. Oceanic islands displayed thriving predator communities across multiple trophic levels. Coastal reserves revealed low numbers, indicating severe overfishing impacts.

Stronger Protection Needed

Scientists warn that urgent action is essential. Remote MPAs demonstrate what effective protection can achieve, with strict no-take rules helping predator populations rebound. In contrast, coastal MPAs still struggle, showing that protection on paper alone is not enough and enforcement must match regulation.

Regional Conservation Priority

The study highlights the need for stronger Pacific conservation corridors. Linking major islands with safe swim ways can allow sharks to migrate naturally between habitats. The researchers urge government to implement these strategies, as the survival of many species may depend on the remoteness and connectivity of these protected areas.
