It’s not every day that something the size of a plane flies past our planet. But in space, even distant encounters can feel quite near. That’s exactly what’s catching the eye of sky watchers and scientists this week.
Asteroid 2025 OL1 to Pass Earth on 30 July
An asteroid named 2025 OL1 is heading Earth’s way. NASA says it will pass by safely without posing any threat. Measuring around 110 feet across, it’s roughly the size of a large aircraft. The space rock is expected to come as close as 1,290,000 kilometres. That may seem far, but in space terms, it is quite close.
The asteroid is travelling at a speed of nearly 17,000 miles per hour. Despite its size, it doesn’t meet NASA’s hazardous standards. For a rock to be risky, it must come within 7.4 million kilometres and be over 85 metres wide. Still, scientists will continue to track its orbit carefully. Even a small shift can change its path in future.
ISRO Eyes Future Defence with Global Partners
India’s space agency, ISRO, is also keeping watch. Though OL1 is not dangerous, plans are already in motion for bigger challenges. ISRO Chairman S Somanath has voiced concerns about asteroid threats. He has called for greater global cooperation with NASA, ESA and JAXA.
One major focus is Apophis, a large asteroid expected to pass Earth in 2029. Somanath wants India to play a bigger role in monitoring such space events. ISRO is working on future missions that could land on asteroids. These will help study their impact and prepare for any real risks.
A Gentle Reminder from Space
The safe flyby of OL1 is no cause for panic. But it’s a reminder that space is full of moving objects. Some come closer than expected. That’s why astronomers keep their eyes fixed on the sky. A quiet pass today could lead to urgent planning tomorrow.
