Lyrid meteor shower 2025

The Lyrid meteor shower will light up skies this April, peaking in the early hours of April 22, 2025. Known for its luminous trails, it offers a celestial show for stargazers.

When and Where to Watch
The Lyrid meteor shower occurs from April 16-25 annually. This year, the peak viewing window falls on April 22. Observers can expect to see 15-20 meteors per hour during peak activity. The best time to watch is pre-dawn when the radiant is high in the constellation Lyra, near the bright star Vega. However, as dawn approaches, the brightening sky will reduce visibility.

To enjoy the shower, head to a dark location. Relax and let your eyes adjust to the dark for 30 minutes. No special equipment is needed—just look up and be patient.

What Makes the Lyrids Special
The Lyrids are medium-bright meteors linked to Comet Thatcher. This long-period comet, which orbits the Sun every 415.5 years, last came close in 1861. The meteors leave vivid dust trains that last for several seconds.

The shower occasionally intensifies, producing up to 100 meteors per hour in rare outbursts. Historical records trace the Lyrids back to 687 B.C., with sightings documented by Chinese astronomers and other cultures. In 1803, Richmond, Virginia, residents likened the meteors to a "shower of sky rockets."

A Universal Spectacle
Meteor showers occur when Earth crosses a comet’s debris trail. As these particles burn in the atmosphere, they create streaks of light, often called "shooting stars." The Lyrids, while not as fast as the Leonids, have charmed skywatchers for centuries with their consistent April display.
