This January, stargazers can enjoy a dazzling celestial display. Four prominent planets will light up the evening sky, offering a rare and mesmerising spectacle for observers. Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars will align, creating a stunning display shortly after sunset.
Mars shines brightly at opposition
Mars, the Red Planet, will reach its opposition on 15-16 January. This marks its closest approach to Earth since 2022. Shining at a magnitude of -1.4, it will be easy to spot in the Gemini constellation. Mars will rise in the east at sunset and set in the west at sunrise.
Venus and Saturn’s close conjunction
Venus and Saturn will dominate the southwestern horizon this month. Appearing brighter than usual, the planets will seem closest on 17 and 18 January. This alignment, known as a conjunction, creates the illusion of proximity despite being millions of miles apart.
