A long-dormant volcano in Ethiopia, Hayli Gubbi, erupted unexpectedly. This volcano is sending ash thousands of kilometres away. The volcanic plume has reached India, delays in flights and raising environmental concerns. Indian authorities and scientists are closely monitoring the ash cloud to ensure public safety.

What has Happened?

Notably, this is the first time in 12,000 years that Hayli Gubbi has erupted towering plumes of ash emerging from the volcano’s summit. Experts say that Hayli Gubbi is a shield volcano, like Hawaii’s Mauna Loa. These volcanoes are known for oozing lava flows, not expelling giant columns of ash.

Where Is the Ash Reaching?

The eruption sent a massive ash plume high into the atmosphere. It is one of the largest eruptions recorded in recent decades. The volcanic ash cloud is drifting across the Red Sea toward India. Regions like Gujarat, Delhi‑NCR, Rajasthan and Punjab may be affected. Upper-level clouds pose limited surface pollution but can affect climate temporarily.

How Is Aviation Impacted?

India’s DGCA issued advisories for airlines to avoid ash-affected airspace. Air India, Akasa and IndiGo have cancelled or rerouted multiple flights. Aircraft flying near the plume are being inspected to ensure safety.

Why Is This Significant?

The eruption highlights how distant geological events can affect global aviation. Volcanic ash contains sulphur dioxide, which may influence environment and weather. It shows the far-reaching impact of rare but powerful natural events.

Who Is Monitoring the Situation?

Indian meteorologists, aviation authorities, and airlines are closely tracking the ash. The airports are coordinating with DGCA for flight safety and airspace control. Scientists monitor plume height and direction to predict its spread accurately.

When Will the Ash Clear?

Forecasts suggest the ash may leave Indian airspace within a few days. Authorities continue to update travel advisories based on cloud movement. The situation is dynamic, requiring careful monitoring for both health and aviation.
