Shraddha Purnima: Significance

Shraddha Purnima is a Parvan Shraddha which means it carries strong spiritual power. It is believed that by performing Shraddha Karma on this day, devotees seek peace and blessings for their departed family members. Unlike Mahalaya Shraddha, which is performed on Amavasya Tithi, Bhadrapada Purnima Shraddha is specifically observed on Purnima.

Although this ritual falls a day before Pitru Paksha 2025. It is not counted as part of Pitru Paksha. However, its significance remains profound as Hindus believe that offering food, water and prayers on this day helps reduce Pitru Rin (ancestral debt) and brings blessings of health, prosperity and spiritual progress.

Rituals of Purnima Shraddha

  • The day begins with a purification bath to attain spiritual purity.
  • Devotees perform Shraddha rituals by offering food, water, and sesame seeds to their ancestors.
  • Tarpan (offering water with prayers) is performed at the end of Shraddha.
  • Donations of food, clothes, and essentials to Brahmins are considered auspicious.
  • Feeding animals, birds, and cows is also encouraged as a symbol of kindness.

Shraddha Purnima 2025 is a sacred opportunity to pay homage to ancestors before the beginning of Pitru Paksha. By performing rituals during the right muhurat, devotees not only express gratitude but also seek peace for departed souls and prosperity for their families.
