Putrada Ekadashi falls in holy month of Shravana, it is a highly revered fasting day in Hindu tradition. This year it will be observed on Tuesday, August 5, the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight). This vrat is especially dedicated to couples wishing for a son. Shravana Putrada Ekadashi holds special importance as it is believed to bless devotees with progeny, especially a virtuous son who can perform post-death rituals for the family's salvation. This Ekadashi is also known as Pavitra Ekadashi or Pavitropana Ekadashi, especially in the Vaishnava tradition, where Lord Vishnu is the primary deity of worship.

Once, Arjuna asked Lord Krishna about the greatness of the Ekadashi that falls in Shravana Shukla Paksha. In response, Krishna narrated the powerful story of King Mahajit. During the Dvapara Yuga, a noble and virtuous king named Mahajit ruled the city of Mahishmati. Though blessed with prosperity and loyalty from his subjects, the king remained deeply sorrowful as he had no children. Despite leading a life of dharma, charity, and justice, the pain of childlessness overshadowed his happiness. Worried about his fate, the king consulted his wise ministers. Determined to find a solution, they journeyed deep into the forest and came upon the revered sage Maharishi Lomasha. Bowing with respect, they shared their king's grief and pleaded for guidance.
The compassionate sage closed his eyes and meditated upon the king’s past lives. He revealed a hidden truth in his previous life, Mahajit had committed a sinful act. Once, during the Ekadashi of Jyeshtha month, a hungry and tired Mahajit found water in a pond but drove away a thirsty cow who was drinking there. While he earned punya (virtue) for fasting that day, his sin of denying water to a cow had led to his childlessness in the present life.
The ministers were devastated and requested a remedy. Sage Lomasha advised: "If all your subjects observe the fast of Putrada Ekadashi during Shravana month with devotion and stay awake all night and then dedicate the virtue of the fast to the king, his sins will be washed away and he will be blessed with a son." They followed the sage’s advice with utmost faith. Soon, the queen conceived, and in due time, gave birth to a radiant son. Thus, the king’s sorrow was turned into joy, and Putrada Ekadashi came to be known as the "giver of sons."
This sacred story teaches us that even small acts of selfishness or cruelty, like denying water to a thirsty being, can have long-term karmic consequences. However, through faith, penance, and devotion, one can correct past misdeeds. True liberation lies in leading a life of compassion, truth, and service to others.
Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is not just about fasting, it is a divine opportunity to seek blessings, cleanse past karmas, and bring happiness into one’s family life. Those desiring progeny or looking to fulfil their dharmic duties must observe this vrat with sincerity, follow proper rituals, and reflect on the spiritual teachings of the vrat katha.
