In Kerala temples are often celebrated for their rituals, architecture, and deep spiritual significance but among them, the Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple in Kannur stands apart. This 700-year-old shrine has a unique tradition; dogs are revered and worshipped as sacred beings. For animal lovers and spiritual seekers alike, this temple offers a rare glimpse into India’s diverse religious traditions.

The presiding deity of the temple is Sree Muthappan, believed to be a manifestation of both Lord Vishnu (Thiruvappana) and Lord Shiva (Vellatom). According to local folklore, Muthappan was always accompanied by dogs, which led to the animals being regarded as divine companions. At the temple entrance, bronze statues of dogs stand guard, symbolizing this sacred bond. Inside the shrine, during prasad distribution, the first serving is always given to a dog before devotees receive it, a ritual that reflects the community’s reverence for “man’s best friend.”

Daily Rituals: Feeding and Caring for Temple Dogs

One of the temple’s most heartwarming practices is nayoottu, the daily ceremony of feeding dogs. Every morning and evening, dogs are served dried fish, beans, and other offerings. Many of them roam freely within and around the temple without fear, as they are considered protectors and messengers of the deity.

Local favorites, like Sundari, a seven-year-old dog, and her mother Meenu, who lived to the age of 15, have become part of the temple’s cherished family. Interestingly, visitors note that there has never been a case of dog attacks or bites here, strengthening the belief in their divine association.

Theyyam Ritual

The temple is also famous for its Theyyam ritual, an ancient Kerala folk performance that combines dance, theater, and worship. Unlike other temples where Theyyam is seasonal, at Parassini Madappura, it is performed daily.

During the ritual, members of the Vannan community transform into the deity through hours of chanting, preparations, and the donning of sacred headgear (mudi). Offerings of toddy, fish, black beans, and tea are made, which are later distributed among devotees. This practice symbolizes Muthappan’s inclusivity accepting offerings that differ from conventional Hindu rituals.

Why This Temple is Special?

The Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple is not only a spiritual center but also a symbol of coexistence between humans and animals. Pet owners often visit to seek blessings for their animals, while devotees from all backgrounds are welcomed here without barriers of caste or creed. The temple’s unique blend of dog worship, daily Theyyam performances, and distinct offerings make it unlike any other shrine in Kerala or the world.
