Nirjala Ekadashi 2025, one of the most spiritually intense and significant fasting days in the Hindu calendar, will be observed on Friday, June 6, 2025, while Vaishnava Nirjala Ekadashi will be observed on Saturday, June 7, 2025.
Also known as Pandava Ekadashi, Bhimseni Ekadashi, or Bhima Ekadashi, this sacred vrat (fast) stands out among the 24 Ekadashis observed annually due to its strict rules and deep spiritual meaning. The word Nirjala means “without water,” and as the name suggests, devotees observe this vrat by completely abstaining from both food and water for a full day and night.
The legend behind Pandava Ekadashi is centered around Bhima, the second of the five Pandava brothers. Known for his enormous appetite, Bhima struggled to follow the Ekadashi fasts observed by his brothers and wife Draupadi. Saddened by his inability to participate in this important spiritual discipline, he approached Sage Vyasa for guidance.
Vyasa advised Bhima to observe just one Ekadashi fast in the year—Nirjala Ekadashi—with full devotion and without food or water. Doing so, Vyasa assured, would bring Bhima the spiritual merit equal to observing all 24 Ekadashis. Thus, Bhima undertook the difficult Nirjala Ekadashi vrat, and ever since, this day is also remembered as Bhimseni or Bhima Ekadashi.
